The company was founded in 1953, when Antonio Curti entered the world of the seventh art by acquiring the historic Minerva brand. Gruppo Minerva International was founded in the early 1970s, based on the experience gained by founding partner Ermanno Curti. In the second half of the 1980s, the entry of Gianluca Curti into the management allowed the company to significantly develop its internationalization, thanks to a decisive commercial expansion that accompanied the increase in production activities and the acquisition of film libraries.
With the Rarovideo brand, active in the national home video market since 1999 and launched in the USA in 2011 under the direction of Stefano Curti, Minerva distributes works of high and recognized artistic value, according to an interdisciplinary approach that combines product quality with editorial care. In a very short time, Rarovideo has gained a wide range of supporters and the affection of critics in an extremely competitive market, being described by the New York Times as “The finest European film boutique.” As a digital publisher, in 2014 Minerva founded Film&Clips, the best free and legal cinema channel on YouTube in Italy and among the top in Europe, with over 12 million total subscribers across more than 90 vertical channels. A vast ecosystem that offers a growing audience complete films, documentaries, clips, trailers, and TV series in various languages. In May 2019, Santo Versace joined the company as a partner of Gianluca Curti. In 2020, the Drama department was inaugurated for the development and production of TV series, documentaries, and TV movies. In 2022, Minerva Pictures launched The Film Club, the first Italian multichannel platform offering an exclusive catalog of auteur and genre films, classics, cult, and rare titles, making up the offer of the six currently available channels: Rarovideo Channel, Minerva Classic, Full Action, The Film Club Premium, Django Western, and LaF-Feltrinelli Media Collection, all replicated on Amazon Prime Video and TimVision. In the same year, the company opened Movieitaly+, the first and only SVOD entirely dedicated to Italian cinema for the international audience. Minerva Pictures also manages five FAST channels broadcast on all major Connected TVs in Italy and two international FAST channels.
Minerva Pictures is active in international acquisitions, thanks to its presence in the main global markets, including AFM, MIPCom and MipTV, Cannes Marché du Film, Berlinale EFM, Toronto, Hong Kong Filmart, MIA Market in Rome, Venice Film Festival, ACFM in Busan, Tiffcom in Tokyo. The company is also one of the most important independent agencies for the sale of rights internationally.
