WILLARD: THE HERMIT OF GULLY LAKE

Cinemavixion Review

Amy Goldberg's "Willard: The Hermit of Gully Lake" offers a captivating glimpse into a life lived on the fringes of society. Set against the rugged backdrop of Nova Scotia's wilderness, the film chronicles the extraordinary tale of Willard MacDonald, an American who vanished into solitude during the 1940s. For over six decades, MacDonald became a figure of local legend, his existence shaping the folklore of the region. Goldberg masterfully weaves together MacDonald's story, exploring themes of isolation, self-reliance, and the enduring power of myth. While the documentary may not boast major awards, its intimate portrayal and the sheer uniqueness of its subject matter provide a compelling narrative. The inclusion of Randy Bachman in the cast suggests a potentially unique perspective or involvement, adding another layer of intrigue to this fascinating character study.
