WHAT BREAKS THE ICE

Cinemavixion Review

Rebecca Eskreis's "What Breaks the Ice" plunges into the heart of a pivotal summer in 1998, exploring the intense, ephemeral bonds of teenage friendship against a backdrop of escalating mystery. The film adeptly captures the heady rush of first connections, portraying the deepening relationship between two girls from disparate backgrounds with authenticity and nuance. Madelyn Cline and her co-stars deliver compelling performances, embodying the volatile mix of innocence and burgeoning awareness that defines adolescence. As the narrative unfurls, weaving a crime into the fabric of their summer idyll, the film transforms into a suspenseful exploration of how unexpected events can irrevocably alter young lives. Eskreis crafts a compelling atmosphere, balancing the warmth of youthful camaraderie with the chilling undercurrent of a sinister plot, making "What Breaks the Ice" a thought-provoking drama that resonates long after the credits roll.
