Anthony Asquith's "We Dive at Dawn" plunges viewers into the tense, claustrophobic world of submarine warfare during World War II. Released in 1943, this British war drama, starring a compelling John Mills, captures the harrowing reality of a mission gone awry. When a crucial assignment to sink a new German battleship forces a submarine crew far behind enemy lines with dwindling fuel, the film masterfully builds suspense. Asquith expertly navigates the psychological toll on the men, showcasing their resilience and the ultimate sacrifice they face. The narrative, enriched by details of the crew's extended pursuit and the perilous attempt to return, serves as a potent reminder of the bravery and strategic gambles inherent in naval combat.
