TUSCALOOSA

Cinemavixion Review

Philip Harder's "Tuscaloosa" plunges viewers into the simmering tensions of Alabama in 1972, a landscape marked by Vietnam War protests and escalating civil rights struggles. The film masterfully intertwines personal drama with societal upheaval, centering on Billy (Devon Bostick), a young man navigating his final summer before college. Billy finds himself drawn to Virginia (Natalia Dyer), a patient at the mental institution run by his father (Tate Donovan), questioning her sanity while falling for her charm. Simultaneously, his best friend Nigel (Marchánt Davis) becomes entangled with a radical civil rights movement targeting the town's entrenched power structure, including Billy's own father. This dual narrative creates a compelling exploration of conflicting loyalties and the search for truth amidst societal unrest. "Tuscaloosa" is a thought-provoking drama that benefits from strong performances and a nuanced portrayal of a turbulent era.
