THE CONTRADICTIONS OF FAIR HOPE

Cinemavixion Review

Narrated by the incomparable Whoopi Goldberg, "The Contradictions Of Fair Hope" offers a poignant exploration into a lesser-known facet of African American history. The film meticulously details the formation of benevolent societies by newly freed slaves across the South, societies dedicated to combating destitution, disease, and the specter of an unmarked grave. As the narrative unfolds, we witness the evolution of these vital community structures, particularly the Fair Hope Benevolent Society, and the poignant gradual erosion of their traditions over time. This award-winning documentary, directed by S. Epatha Merkerson and Rockell Metcalf, not only educates but also evokes a deep sense of empathy for the resilience and foresight of a people striving for dignity and mutual support in the aftermath of immense societal upheaval. The film's 7.4 rating on IMDb and its 2012 release underscore its critical appreciation.
