The Victorian era, a period of profound societal and artistic change, also witnessed a remarkable evolution in poetry. This documentary delves into the lives and works of poets who, while perhaps overshadowed by their Romantic predecessors, forged new paths and refined existing forms. The increased prominence of the sonnet, for instance, demonstrates a growing sophistication and a desire for structural innovation that would resonate with future generations of writers. By examining the influences of Romantic figures like Wordsworth, who served as a transitional figure, and the ascendancy of Tennyson as Poet Laureate, we gain a nuanced appreciation for the distinct character of Victorian verse.
