Robert N. Bradbury's "The Rider of the Law" (1935) is a quintessential B-Western that offers a lean, efficient dose of frontier justice. Starring the ever-reliable Bob Steele as Bob Marlow, the film plunges us into a tense cat-and-mouse game in an Arizona town terrorized by the notorious Tolliver brothers. Marlow, adopting the guise of an Eastern greenhorn, must dismantle the outlaw gang from within. The narrative, penned by Jack Natteford, cleverly utilizes the brothers' own 'ineptness' to Marlow's advantage, leading to a series of escalating confrontations. While not a film of grand artistic ambition, "The Rider of the Law" excels in its straightforward storytelling and brisk pacing, characteristic of the era's direct-to-audience Westerns. The supporting cast, including Gertrude Messinger and Si Jenks, provides solid, if understated, performances. With a runtime of just 59 minutes, it's a tightly constructed tale that delivers on its promise of action and resolution, culminating in a chase towards the Mexican border that keeps audiences engaged. A solid entry for fans of classic Westerns.
