THE REAL NUNS OF SPAIN

Cinemavixion Review

"The Real Nuns of Spain" offers a profoundly intimate glimpse into a world often shrouded in mystery and contemplation. This documentary patiently observes seventeen Franciscan sisters, all in their eighties, as they navigate the rhythms of convent life. From the quiet solemnity of dawn prayers to the more mundane yet essential tasks of sewing and tending to the harvest, the film captures a life dedicated to both spiritual duty and earthly concerns. The directorial approach, often positioning the camera in shadowed halls, lends a sense of quiet observation, allowing the sisters' personalities to emerge organically through their conversations—ranging from theological debates to discussions of persimmons and birthday preparations. As these women, who once traversed the globe, now find their world confined to the convent walls, the film poignantly questions the future of their contemplative lifestyle in a rapidly evolving external world. Yet, amidst these weighty reflections, the convent's corridors echo with laughter, gossip, and unexpected levity, revealing a rich tapestry of human experience that transcends the cloistered setting.
