Terence Fisher, a director more commonly associated with the gothic thrills of Hammer Horror, delivers a surprisingly taut and atmospheric noir with "The Black Glove" (1954). The film plunges the audience into the smoky jazz clubs and rain-slicked streets of London, where American trumpet virtuoso Brad Bradley (a suitably conflicted Alex Nicol) finds himself entangled in a murder investigation after a dinner with a captivating blues singer ends in tragedy. Scotland Yard's suspicion quickly falls on Bradley, forcing him to navigate a shadowy underworld and identify the real culprit before his own career and freedom are silenced. While the plot adheres to familiar noir conventions, Fisher's distinctive directorial touch imbues the proceedings with a palpable sense of dread and suspense. The supporting cast, including Eleanor Summerfield and John Salew, provide solid performances that anchor the mystery. "The Black Glove" stands as a compelling example of the genre, showcasing Fisher's versatility and offering a darker, more complex narrative than his more celebrated horror outings.
