SOLE NEGLI OCCHI
Cinemavixion Review
Andrea Porporati's "Sole negli occhi" is a profound descent into the darkest corners of the human psyche, anchored by a truly arresting performance from Fabrizio Gifuni. Gifuni embodies Marco, a young man from a seemingly privileged background in Northern Italy, whose inexplicable act of brutal patricide shatters the veneer of normalcy. The film masterfully eschews easy answers, resisting the temptation of sensationalism or simplistic explanations of "madness." Instead, Porporati, with a keen visual sense, guides us through Marco's fractured internal landscape as he flees and attempts to disappear into the anonymity of a seaside town. Valerio Mastandrea provides a compelling counterpoint as Rinaldi, the detective who suspects Marco but quickly realizes he is pursuing something far more complex than a common criminal. Rinaldi's growing understanding that Marco is a vessel for a deeper, past trauma adds a layer of psychological intrigue. The narrative gains further depth with the introduction of a young, infatuated neighbor, whose presence inadvertently forces Marco to confront the hidden, unacknowledged roots of his violence. "Sole negli occhi" is a challenging yet rewarding exploration of the "banality of evil," a film that trusts its audience to grapple with the uncomfortable truths it lays bare, achieving a Dostoevskian resonance through its unflinching focus on internal torment.
