SHAOLIN DRUNK MONKEY

Cinemavixion Review

"Shaolin Drunk Monkey" presents a compelling narrative centered on Hou Ying Quan, a martial arts prodigy whose formidable skills are matched only by his burgeoning arrogance. Portrayed with kinetic energy by Ko Fei, Hou Ying Quan's journey from an overconfident warrior to a disciplined master forms the core of this 1981 film. Director Godfrey Ho masterfully stages the action, emphasizing the unique and often unpredictable movements of the Shaolin Drunken Fist style. The film excels in its depiction of martial arts prowess, with standout performances from Billy Chow and Dick Wei complementing Ko Fei's central role. While Hou Ying Quan's initial hubris leads him into perilous confrontations, his eventual tutelage under the wise Shaolin Abbot offers a poignant lesson in humility and true mastery. This is a film that celebrates not just the physical discipline of kung fu, but also the inner strength required to overcome one's own ego.
