ROME: EMPIRE WITHOUT LIMIT

Cinemavixion Review

Mary Beard's "Rome: Empire Without Limit" offers a compelling journey into the very foundations of Roman civilization, moving beyond the polished marble to explore the rough-hewn origins of a world-shaping power. Beard masterfully peels back layers of myth and legend, revealing a Rome born from fratricide yet sustained by an early, surprising inclusivity towards its neighbours and vanquished foes. The series traces Rome's expansion, from its clashes with Carthage to its complex cultural interactions in Greece and its brutal campaigns in Gaul, challenging the notion that imperial grandeur preceded Roman dominance. Beard argues persuasively that the monumental Rome we recognize was a product of conquest, and that the very act of empire fundamentally reshaped Roman politics, paving the way for autocracy. This is a vital exploration for anyone seeking to understand the deep-seated psyche and enduring legacy of the Roman Empire.
