Cinemavixion Review

This documentary delves into the complex question of Roman identity, exploring what it truly meant to be Roman within the vast expanse of the Empire. The episode thoughtfully examines the assimilation and resistance encountered across different regions, from the 'more Roman than Rome' frontier communities in Algeria to the hybrid cultures of Britain. It highlights the diverse origins of individuals who became integral to Roman society, showcasing stories like an African Roman governor in Britain and the varied remains found in York and Newcastle. The narrative skillfully illustrates that Roman identity was not monolithic, but a fluid concept shaped by conquest, opportunity, and local interaction, ultimately revealing a rich tapestry of cultures under Roman rule.
