Péter Engert's "Penance Lane" plunges viewers into a chilling descent alongside Crimson Matthews, a recently paroled convict seeking quietude as a handyman. However, the decrepit dwelling he's tasked with fixing harbors a malevolent presence, a nexus of twisted horrors that defy rational explanation. The film masterfully builds suspense, questioning why Matthews, or indeed anyone, would choose to remain in such a cursed locale. Tyler Mane delivers a compelling performance as the conflicted protagonist, supported by notable turns from Scout Taylor-Compton and John Schneider. While the narrative delves into familiar horror tropes, its exploration of inescapable dread and the allure of the macabre offers a potent, albeit unsettling, cinematic experience.
