MR. WONG, DETECTIVE

Cinemavixion Review

William Nigh's "Mr. Wong, Detective" presents a classic Chinatown mystery, anchored by the formidable presence of Boris Karloff as the titular private investigator. The narrative, which involves the murder of a factory owner and a subsequent investigation into stolen scientific findings, unfolds with a satisfyingly complex plot. Karloff delivers a nuanced performance, embodying Wong's sharp intellect and quiet determination. He is ably supported by Grant Withers as the police captain and Maxine Jennings as the victim's secretary, forming a capable team to unravel the conspiracy. While the film's pacing and production values reflect its 1938 origins, its intricate plotting and Karloff's compelling portrayal make it a noteworthy entry in the detective genre, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of cinematic sleuthing.
