Avi Nesher's 1996 action-thriller "Mercenary" presents a grim, if somewhat formulaic, revenge narrative. The film centers on Jonas Ambler (John Ritter), a wealthy businessman whose life is shattered when his wife is murdered by kidnappers. Driven by a thirst for vengeance, Ambler hires a hardened mercenary, played by Olivier Gruner, to hunt down the perpetrators. However, Ambler's desire for retribution is so potent that he insists on accompanying the mercenary on the kill mission, setting the stage for a volatile and potentially explosive partnership. While "Mercenary" may not break new ground in the genre, it offers a serviceable blend of action and suspense. The performances, particularly from the leads, anchor the film's darker themes.
