ISLAND OF DESIRE

Cinemavixion Review

"Island of Desire" presents a compelling, albeit unconventional, wartime romance set against the stark beauty of a South Pacific atoll. Linda Darnell delivers a nuanced performance as a Canadian nurse, initially at odds with the younger Marine, played with earnestness by Tab Hunter. Director Stuart Heisler masterfully navigates the escalating emotional landscape as isolation breeds unexpected intimacy between the two survivors. The arrival of a third party, an RAF flyer, injects a classic love triangle dynamic, testing the bonds forged in solitude. While the film's narrative explores primal instincts and evolving perceptions, it is anchored by strong performances and a captivating tropical setting. Its exploration of human connection under duress, coupled with the backdrop of World War II, offers a poignant reflection on desire and survival, making it a noteworthy entry from 1952.
