HANDSOME DEVIL

Cinemavixion Review

In "Handsome Devil," director John Butler crafts a poignant coming-of-age story set against the rigid backdrop of an Irish boarding school. The film centers on the unexpected bond between Ned, a sensitive outsider, and Conor, a popular rugby player. Their burgeoning friendship, nurtured by a progressive English teacher, challenges the hyper-masculine, rugby-obsessed culture of the institution. The narrative thoughtfully explores themes of identity, conformity, and the courage it takes to embrace one's true self, particularly when societal expectations loom large. The performances are nuanced, capturing the awkwardness and exhilaration of adolescence. "Handsome Devil" is a warm and resonant film that celebrates individuality and the power of genuine connection in finding one's voice.
