BEFORE I CHANGE MY MIND

Cinemavixion Review

Trevor Anderson's "Before I Change My Mind" plunges into the disorienting terrain of adolescence in a 1987 Alberta setting. The film centers on Robin, a non-binary teen navigating the isolating experience of relocating to a new town. Immediately marked by the curiosity and judgment of their peers, Robin's journey takes a precarious turn when they pursue an alliance with Carter, the school's established bully. This desperate bid for acceptance, however, propels Robin toward a series of self-destructive decisions, exploring the profound and often painful consequences of seeking belonging in inhospitable environments. Vaughan Murrae delivers a compelling performance as Robin, capturing the vulnerability and complex emotional landscape of a young person grappling with identity and social pressures. Anderson’s direction thoughtfully portrays the nuances of small-town dynamics and the internal struggles of its protagonist.
