Cinemavixion Review

Suridh Das-Hassan's "Football Match Fixing | The Bribes, The Dives, and The Backroom Deals | The Dark Side of Soccer" plunges viewers into the murky underbelly of Asian football, exposing a pervasive culture of corruption that extends far beyond the pitch. The documentary meticulously details how match-fixing syndicates, often intertwined with government officials and corporate entities, manipulate game outcomes. Through the compelling narrative of English coach Simon McMenemy's experience in Indonesia, the film illustrates the systemic pressures faced by players and coaches alike. McMenemy's journey, from navigating cultural differences to confronting the reality that talent alone doesn't guarantee victory, serves as a potent lens through which to view the sport's exploitation. The film unearths startling evidence of pre-determined tournaments, players instructed to feign fouls, and even referees demanding illicit payments for impartial officiating. "Foul Play" powerfully argues that this deeply entrenched corruption in Indonesian football mirrors broader regional stagnation, leaving audiences with a sobering perspective on the game's integrity.
