Hammer Films delivers a chilling descent into vanity and bloodlust with 'Countess Dracula.' Ingrid Pitt commands the screen as the aging Countess Elisabeth Nádasdy, a widow whose desperate quest for eternal youth leads her down a path of unspeakable horror, bathing in the blood of virgins. Director Peter Sasdy masterfully crafts an atmosphere of gothic dread, complemented by the film's period detail and a palpable sense of decay. While the 1971 film may not boast the most elaborate production values, its thematic exploration of aging and the corrupting nature of power remains potent. Pitt's performance is central, capturing both the Countess's fragile facade and her monstrous depravity. The supporting cast, including Nigel Green as the loyal but increasingly compromised Captain Dobi, provides solid grounding for the Countess's macabre machinations. A worthy, albeit grim, entry in the Hammer horror canon.
