J.P. Schaefer's "Chapter 27" offers a disquieting descent into the fractured psyche of Mark David Chapman, the man who irrevocably altered music history. Anchored by a transformative and unsettling performance from Jared Leto, who gained a significant amount of weight for the role, the film meticulously chronicles the days leading up to John Lennon's assassination. Leto's portrayal captures the disturbing blend of delusion, obsession with J.D. Salinger's "The Catcher in the Rye," and a desperate craving for notoriety that consumed Chapman. While the film's critical reception was notably lukewarm, with Rotten Tomatoes awarding it a mere 18%, its exploration of a disturbed mind provides a chilling, albeit challenging, cinematic experience. Lindsay Lohan also features in a supporting role. Despite its modest box office performance of $56,215, "Chapter 27" remains a potent, if grim, character study that grapples with the dark intersection of fame, obsession, and violence.
