Cinemavixion Review

Joey Klein's "Castle in the Ground" is a raw and unflinching descent into the throes of grief, addiction, and the opioid crisis, anchored by a trio of compelling performances. Alex Wolff delivers a tour-de-force as Henry, a teenager grappling with the recent death of his mother and the complicity he feels in her passing. Wolff masterfully navigates Henry's crippling grief, his burgeoning dependence on his charismatic neighbor Ana (a vibrant Imogen Poots), and his entanglement in a dangerous world of drugs and violence. Neve Campbell, though appearing primarily in flashbacks, provides a poignant presence as Henry's ailing mother. The film, released in 2019, paints a bleak yet resonant picture of a small town succumbing to the epidemic, with Klein's direction maintaining a tense, intimate atmosphere. While the narrative occasionally treads familiar ground, the emotional authenticity and the powerful performances, particularly Wolff's, elevate "Castle in the Ground" into a significant, albeit somber, cinematic experience.
