BEYOND THE LIMITS

Cinemavixion Review

Olaf Ittenbach's 'Beyond the Limits' presents a narrative tapestry woven from disparate threads, attempting to bridge the gritty underworld of contemporary crime with the shadowy pronouncements of medieval inquisition. The film follows Vivian, a rookie journalist, as she interviews Frederick, the enigmatic caretaker of an ancient cemetery. Through his tales, we are introduced to two intertwined stories: one concerning the gangster Jimmie Levinson and the murder of his partner Paul Pattuchi, the other delving into the pursuit of a renegade priest, James Flynn, by the cruel David Deming during the Middle Ages. The central mystery revolves around a 'mysterious relic' and the 'Eternal Heart,' promising immortality. While the ambition to connect these distinct timelines and genres is commendable, the execution may leave viewers grappling with the fragmented plot. The performances, particularly from Darren Shahlavi, Russell Friedenberg, and David Creedon, anchor the more visceral elements, but the film's true impact lies in its audacious attempt to explore themes of mortality, power, and secrets across centuries.
