BANDIT QUEEN

Cinemavixion Review

Shekhar Kapur's "Bandit Queen" is a powerful and unflinching portrayal of Phoolan Devi's tumultuous life. Released in 1994, the film masterfully navigates the complex journey of a woman who rose from poverty and abuse to become a notorious outlaw and eventually a political figure. Seema Biswas delivers a career-defining performance, embodying Devi's rage, resilience, and vulnerability with remarkable depth. The narrative, set against the backdrop of rural India, is both epic in scope and intensely personal, exploring themes of caste, gender, and social injustice. "Bandit Queen" is not merely a biopic; it's a searing commentary on societal structures and the human cost of oppression, earning critical acclaim and recognition, including four wins and three nominations, and a strong audience reception with a 7.5 IMDb rating and an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes.
