AMERICAN COMMUNE

Cinemavixion Review

A deeply personal and unflinching look at the utopian dream of communal living, 'American Commune' is a documentary that resonates with both historical curiosity and raw emotional honesty. Directed by siblings Rena and Nadine Mundo, the film revisits the commune where they were raised, exploring the idealistic fervor of the 1970s socialist experiment and its eventual unraveling. The directors masterfully weave together archival footage and present-day reflections, confronting a past they once sought to bury. The narrative skillfully balances the macro-level rise and fall of a unique American community with the intimate saga of their own family. It’s a poignant exploration of how grand ideals can intersect with personal lives, offering a compelling, often surprising, examination of legacy and belonging.
