YOKAI

Cinemavixion Review

Cristóbal Echevensko's "YOKAI" plunges viewers into a chilling narrative centered on Lydia, a jewelry store employee who concocts a desperate plan to steal a valuable diamond from her employer's enigmatic residence. Driven by the urgent need to fund her sister's treatment, Lydia enlists the help of her friend Juan. What begins as a heist quickly spirals into a nightmarish ordeal when Mr. Yokai's unexpected return coincides with a brutal act of violence. The film masterfully blends suspense with supernatural terror, as Lydia and Juan find themselves trapped in a deadly game of cat and mouse, haunted by the spectral echoes of Yokai's past victims. Francisca Sfeir delivers a compelling performance as Lydia, navigating the escalating dread with palpable intensity. Echevensko crafts a tense atmosphere, utilizing the mysterious house as a character in itself, amplifying the psychological stakes. "YOKAI" is a gripping exploration of desperation and the terrifying consequences that arise when greed leads one into the darkest of human — and perhaps inhuman — desires.
