Gabriela Tagliavini's "Without Men" offers a compelling, albeit somewhat uneven, exploration of female resilience and societal transformation. Set in a remote Latin American village where an entire male population is conscripted by guerrillas, the film pivots from tragedy to a narrative of empowerment. The women are left to rebuild their lives and community, challenging traditional gender roles and discovering a newfound independence. The return of the men, however, introduces a complex layer of tension, testing the established power dynamics and the rekindled, or perhaps altered, romantic relationships. While the film's premise is potent, its execution occasionally falters, but the performances, particularly from Eva Longoria and Kate Del Castillo, anchor the narrative with emotional depth. "Without Men" ultimately serves as a thought-provoking commentary on gender, community, and the unexpected ways in which adversity can foster growth and self-discovery.
