WHAT WAS LIFE REALLY LIKE IN A VICTORIAN WORKHOUSE? | SECRETS FROM THE WORKHOUSE

Cinemavixion Review

This compelling two-part documentary delves into the stark realities of Victorian workhouses, institutions that formed a grim cornerstone of society. While ostensibly providing basic sustenance and healthcare to the poor and destitute, these establishments were, in reality, instruments of punishment, designed to deter poverty and foster a forced independence. The series takes a unique and personal approach by following several UK celebrities as they investigate the lives of their ancestors within these harsh environments. Through this journey, viewers gain a poignant insight into the struggles faced by those relegated to the workhouse, uncovering unexpected family secrets that serve as both shocking revelations and sources of inspiration. The exploration offers a vital historical perspective on social welfare and the societal attitudes towards poverty in the Victorian era.
