WHAT?

Cinemavixion Review

Alek Lev's "What?" is a bold and inventive black and white silent comedy that champions artistic integrity and the power of self-expression. John Maucere delivers a tour-de-force performance as Don, a Deaf actor weary of the demeaning roles often offered to performers with disabilities. Frustrated by Hollywood's limitations, Don embarks on a defiant journey to create his own narrative, writing, directing, and starring in this unique film. "What?" masterfully utilizes American Sign Language to convey a story that is both hilariously poignant and deeply resonant. It serves as a powerful commentary on the challenges faced by Deaf artists while celebrating their talent and resilience. With a commendable 17 wins and 5 nominations, and a solid 6.4 rating on IMDb, this film is a testament to Maucere's vision and Lev's execution, offering a fresh perspective on storytelling and a much-needed spotlight on underrepresented voices in cinema.
