Giorgio Ferroni's "Two Guns and a Coward" (1968) presents a compelling, albeit unconventional, take on the Western genre, anchored by a nuanced performance from Anthony Steffen. Steffen portrays Gary McGuire, a renowned trick-shot artist known as "Hurricane West" within the circus circuit. His dazzling skills with a firearm, however, mask a profound psychological block against violence, stemming from a childhood incident that resulted in his brother's death. This internal conflict, a scar on his neck serving as a constant reminder, shapes his character, making him appear cowardly in the face of real-world danger. The narrative gains momentum with the introduction of Tony Murphy, an orphaned boy seeking help to reclaim his family farm, which was stolen by ruthless bandits. Unbeknownst to the villains, the farm holds a hidden fortune, and the boy is the sole keeper of its secret. Adding another layer of intrigue, the lead gunman involved in the farm's appropriation is revealed to be the very individual who shamed Gary years prior, pushing him towards a life of self-imposed exile and alcohol. The film masterfully explores themes of trauma, redemption, and the courage it takes to confront one's deepest fears, even when the path of violence seems the easiest. While perhaps not a typical guns-blazing Western, "Two Guns and a Coward" offers a thoughtful character study wrapped in the familiar landscape of the American West, elevated by Steffen's sensitive portrayal of a man battling his own demons.
