Roy Del Ruth's "Topper Returns" from 1941 is a delightful spectral caper that continues the beloved "Topper" series with a fresh, albeit posthumous, protagonist. The film masterfully blends comedy and mystery as the spirit of Gail Richards, portrayed with vivacious energy by Joan Blondell, seeks justice for her untimely demise. When Gail is mistakenly murdered in her friend Ann Carrington's (Carole Landis) home, she enlists the perpetually flustered Cosmo Topper (Roland Young) to unmask the killer. Young’s portrayal of Topper, a man constantly bewildered by the supernatural, remains a cornerstone of the series' charm.
