Jillian Clare's directorial debut, "To the Beat!" (2018), offers a vibrant, albeit familiar, narrative centered around the competitive world of youth dance. The film introduces us to twins Mia and Mackie, whose passion for dance is put to the test when their favorite pop star announces an online dance contest. The ensuing competition sees the sisters forming their own teams, navigating friendships, and facing off against their ambitious neighbor, Avery. While the plot treads well-worn ground, the performances, particularly from Laura Krystine, Brisa Lalich, and Jayden Bartels, inject energy and heart into the story. The film captures the camaraderie and rivalries inherent in youth sports, making it a relatable watch for young audiences. Though it may not break new ground in the genre, "To the Beat!" serves as an entertaining showcase for burgeoning talent and the universal language of dance.
