In 1971, Iran's Shah orchestrated a celebration of unparalleled extravagance to mark 2,500 years of Persian monarchy. This documentary, 'The World's Most Expensive Party | Celebrating Persian History,' delves into the opulence and political undertones of an event where money was no object. A temporary tent city, constructed from 37 kilometers of silk in a purpose-built oasis, served as the stage for a lavish affair. The renowned Maxim's restaurant closed for two weeks to prepare a five-course banquet for over sixty international monarchs, presidents, and royalty, complemented by rare wines. Over five days, guests witnessed a spectacular pageant of thousands of soldiers in ancient Persian attire, a 'son et Lumiere' ceremony at Darius the Great's temple, and the inauguration of Tehran's Azadi Tower, a monument dedicated to the Shah. While a testament to the Shah's power and vision, the film also highlights how this ostentatious display deepened the divide between the ruler and his people, crystallizing opposition and ultimately marking a turning point that presaged the Iranian Revolution.
