David Grotell's 'The Wishmakers' offers a poignant, albeit sometimes uneven, look at the universal quest for love and fulfillment, set against the glittering, often unforgiving backdrop of Los Angeles. The film follows three gay men who, upon arriving in the city, make a collective wish in a fountain – a symbolic act of hope for finding not just romance, but also purpose and transcendence in a world saturated by social media and fleeting fame. While the narrative explores familiar themes of adaptation and aspiration, the performances, particularly from leads Ari Sorrentino, Matt Achine, and Justin Martindale, imbue the characters with a relatable vulnerability. Grotell’s direction captures the specific anxieties and excitements of navigating a new city and a new phase of life, making 'The Wishmakers' a charming, if understated, exploration of modern romance and self-discovery.
