THE VIKINGS: THE DARK AGE MASTERS OF SHIPBUILDING

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary delves into a fascinating reinterpretation of the Dark Ages, challenging the conventional narrative of decline and barbarism. Focusing on the ingenuity of the era's artisans, it highlights the remarkable shipbuilding prowess of the Vikings. Far from being mere raiders, their voyages were driven by complex motivations, including defense of their own culture and gods, as evidenced by their attacks on Christian centers like Lindisfarne. The episode also touches upon the artistic richness of the Carolingians and the industriousness of the Anglo-Saxons. Ultimately, it posits that the true defining elements of this period were not military might, but the enduring power of the written word, manifested in exquisite artistry across wood, stone, and illuminated manuscripts, with the Lindisfarne Gospels presented as a paramount example of this creative spirit.
