THE UNTOLD DARKNESS OF THE RENAISSANCE

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary delves into the tumultuous final act of the Renaissance, a period often overshadowed by its more celebrated earlier phases. Waldemar Januszczak guides viewers through an era defined by profound societal upheaval, where war, confusion, and encroaching darkness became fertile ground for artistic innovation. The episode masterfully connects this turbulent backdrop to the works of visionary artists such as Leonardo da Vinci, Hieronymus Bosch, Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Bernard Palissy, the Italian Mannerists, and El Greco. It highlights how their art, far from being mere reflections, actively captured and interpreted the madness and distortion that characterized this surprising climax of the Renaissance, offering a compelling new perspective on a familiar historical epoch.
