THE TRUTH ABOUT TURKMENBASHI, THE HAPPY DICTATOR

Cinemavixion Review

Waldemar Januszczak's "The Truth About Turkmenbashi, The Happy Dictator" offers a rare and unflinching look into the secretive heart of Turkmenistan, a nation often shrouded in mystery and comparison to 'the North Korea of Central Asia'. Januszczak, acting as both critic and guide, embarks on a personal journey, posing as a tourist to penetrate the veil of paranoia woven by the late dictator, Turkmenbashi. The documentary cleverly juxtaposes the absurdity of a regime that banned everything from cinemas to ballet with the stark reality of its isolated populace. Januszczak's intrepid exploration, camera in hand, aims to sift fact from the pervasive fiction surrounding this enigmatic desert republic. It's a compelling, if unsettling, portrait of a nation under the long shadow of a megalomaniacal leader, presented with Januszczak's characteristic wit and critical eye.
