Cinemavixion Review

The documentary series "Disappearing World," originally broadcast between 1970 and 1975, presents a compelling anthropological snapshot of traditional communities grappling with the encroaching forces of modernity. This particular installment, "The Tribe Fighting To Maintain Its Culture," focuses on the Maku and Barasana people residing in the forests of Colombia. It poignantly captures the tension between the tribe's deep-rooted cultural norms and the external pressures exerted by competing religious groups, Protestants and Catholics, who seek to impose their beliefs. As societal progression accelerates, the film poses a critical question: can these indigenous communities preserve their unique heritage? This documentary stands as a significant landmark of its era, offering a sensitive and important look at the challenges faced by cultures on the brink of change.
