THE STEEL HELMET

Cinemavixion Review

Samuel Fuller's 'The Steel Helmet' is a raw and visceral portrayal of the Korean War, offering a stark look at the grim realities faced by soldiers far from home. The film excels in its unflinching depiction of combat and the psychological toll it takes, centering on a beleaguered squad finding refuge in an abandoned temple. Gene Evans delivers a commanding performance as the weary sergeant, anchoring the narrative with his rugged presence. Fuller's signature gritty style is on full display, eschewing Hollywood gloss for a more authentic, almost documentary-like feel. Despite its age, the film's thematic exploration of survival, camaraderie, and the dehumanizing nature of war remains potent, making it a significant entry in the war film genre, lauded for its 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
