THE SOVIET GARDEN

Cinemavixion Review

Dragos Turea's "The Soviet Garden" is a fascinating documentary that delves into a peculiar chapter of Soviet history through a deeply personal lens. The film follows the filmmaker's own investigation into his grandmother's death, which unearths a clandestine scientific endeavor orchestrated during the Soviet era. The ambition was grand: to harness atomic energy and transform Moldova into a veritable 'Soviet Garden,' a testament to Khrushchev's vision for agricultural innovation. Turea masterfully weaves together personal narrative with historical inquiry, revealing the ambitious, and perhaps hubristic, attempts to reshape nature through science. The documentary, released in 2019, has garnered attention for its unique subject matter and its compelling exploration of legacy and scientific ambition. With a reported 7.0 rating on IMDb and two nominations, "The Soviet Garden" offers a thought-provoking glimpse into a little-known aspect of Cold War-era scientific pursuits and their potential impact on a nation's identity and landscape.
