THE SMURFS

Cinemavixion Review

The Smurfs, those diminutive blue beings with a penchant for peril and Papa Smurf's wisdom, leap from the comic page and animated screen into a live-action adventure. This 2011 film, directed by Raja Gosnell, transplants the beloved characters into the bustling heart of New York City, a stark contrast to their idyllic forest village. The premise, which sees the Smurfs inadvertently escaping the clutches of the ever-scheming Gargamel (Hank Azaria) and landing in Central Park, is a whimsical setup for fish-out-of-water comedy. While the critical reception, as indicated by a 21% score on Rotten Tomatoes, suggests a mixed bag, the film offers a lighthearted diversion. Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays provide earnest human anchors to the animated chaos, navigating the Smurfs' plight with commendable commitment. It's a colorful, if somewhat predictable, family outing that captures the enduring charm of its pint-sized protagonists, even as it navigates the challenges of merging animation with live-action.
