Earl E. Smith's "The Shadow of Chikara" is a peculiar and atmospheric blend of Western grit and supernatural horror from 1977. The film plunges viewers into the rugged Arkansas mountains, following two former Confederate captains on a quest for hidden diamonds. However, their pursuit is shadowed by the legend of Chikara, a native spirit said to fiercely protect the sacred land from intruders. Joe Don Baker anchors the film with a compelling performance, supported by Sondra Locke and Ted Neeley. While the narrative occasionally treads familiar treasure-hunting tropes, the introduction of eerie, unsettling horror elements elevates it beyond a standard Western.
