THE SECRET LIVES OF THE MAHARAJAHS

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary offers a fascinating, if sometimes jarring, glimpse into the opulent world of Indian Maharajahs and their Rajput descendants. Directed by Stéphanie Lebrun and Mélanie Gallard, the film juxtaposes the immense wealth and ceremonial grandeur of royal families with the stark realities of inequality and poverty in India. We witness the enduring traditions and the profound respect accorded to these royal lineages, even as the younger generation grapples with destinies far removed from ordinary life. The narrative highlights the unique customs, such as arranged marriages where the groom may not have met his bride, set against the backdrop of modernized palaces now operating as luxury hotels. The film captures the tension between inherited privilege and the personal desires of young princes, offering a rich, if complex, portrait of a vanishing aristocracy navigating the modern world.
