THE RETREAT

Cinemavixion Review

Pat Mills' "The Retreat" plunges viewers into the unforgiving wilderness of the Adirondack Mountains, a setting as beautiful as it is treacherous. The film centers on Gus and Adam, two friends whose winter backpacking trip descends into a desperate fight for survival. As Gus finds himself isolated and disoriented, the narrative masterfully blurs the lines between external threat and internal psychological breakdown. The presence of the Wendigo, a chilling figure from Native American legend, serves as a potent catalyst for exploring themes of fear, isolation, and the struggle to maintain sanity in the face of unimaginable horror. While the film's atmosphere is its strongest asset, it's the raw, visceral portrayal of Gus's ordeal that truly grips the audience, leaving a haunting impression long after the credits roll.
