Joe D'Amato's "The Pleasure" plunges into the murky depths of desire and familial entanglement, set against the backdrop of early 1930s Italy. The narrative centers on the elderly aristocrat Gerard, haunted by the memory of Leonora, his lost love, whose erotic confessions are preserved on tape. Leonora, we learn, lived a complex existence, straddling the roles of a respectable wife and mother and a woman of the night. Upon her death, her children, Ursula and Edmund, fall under Gerard's care, initiating a descent into a world where memory, identity, and forbidden attraction blur. The film is a provocative exploration of obsession, as Gerard finds himself bewildered by Ursula's striking resemblance to her mother. The plot thickens with undertones of incestuous longing and the lingering influence of the past, particularly through Leonora's recorded voice guiding Ursula. D'Amato crafts a disturbing yet compelling atmosphere, utilizing the erotic legacy to question the nature of love and inheritance.
