THE NUN AND THE DEVIL

Cinemavixion Review

Domenico Paolella's "The Nun and the Devil" plunges viewers into the tumultuous 16th-century convent of Sant'Arcangelo di Baiano, a cloistered world rife with ambition and forbidden desire. Set against a backdrop of religious fervor and the ever-present threat of the Inquisition, the film masterfully depicts the brutal power struggle that erupts following the mother superior's death. Ornella Muti delivers a compelling performance as a nun from a powerful family, willing to employ any means necessary to ascend to the coveted position of abbess. The narrative intricately weaves themes of faith, sexuality, and corruption, exposing the dark undercurrents beneath the veneer of piety. The film's gritty portrayal of monastic life and the characters' desperate machinations makes for a captivating, albeit unsettling, cinematic experience, offering a stark look at human nature when power is at stake.
