THE NEW MAHARAJAHS | EXTREMES OF WEALTH AND POVERTY IN INDIA

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary plunges into the opulent yet complex world of India's burgeoning billionaire class, a phenomenon that places the nation among the top global hubs for extreme wealth. The film contrasts the dazzling displays of luxury—lavish weddings, sprawling estates, and extravagant travel—with the stark reality of widespread poverty, highlighting the stark economic disparities within India. Through a six-month investigation, the documentary offers an intimate look into the lives of both inherited wealth and self-made tycoons, exploring the challenges they face in ascending to the apex of the economic pyramid. Beyond the glamour, the film critically examines the darker undercurrents of this affluence, delving into allegations of tax evasion and money laundering that accompany the nation's rapid economic growth. It presents a compelling, albeit unsettling, portrait of contemporary India, where immense fortunes are amassed amidst significant societal inequality.
