THE MYSTICAL MADAGASCAR

Cinemavixion Review

Annette Scheurich and Dr. Rosie Koch's 'The Mystical Madagascar' is a cinematic journey into the heart of a unique island nation, weaving together the threads of its breathtaking natural beauty, the profound spiritual connection its people share with the environment, and the urgent efforts towards conservation. The documentary immerses viewers in the 'shadowy, damp virgin forests,' alive with the 'eerie sounds' and the evocative 'cry of the lemurs,' painting a vivid picture of an 'enchanted world.' It expertly highlights the 'unusually spiritual relationship' the Malagasy people have with nature, shaped by 'animal legends, myths, taboos and ancestor worship.' The film commendably showcases the 'stunning beauty and diversity' of Madagascar's ecosystems, earning praise from ecotourists, biologists, and scientists alike. Crucially, 'The Mystical Madagascar' goes beyond mere observation, focusing on the vital role of the Malagasy people in preservation. Through encounters with musicians, rangers, farmers, healers, and conservation authority officers, the documentary illustrates their dedicated work to safeguard the island's pristine landscapes. It effectively raises awareness about the importance of conservation for these 'fragile habitats' and the 'livelihood for future generations,' emphasizing that true preservation is a collaborative effort between nature and its human inhabitants.
